Honey Island Swamp Kayak Tours
Join our naturalist kayak guides on a backwoods kayak tour of Honey Island Swamp. Located east of New Orleans, the Honey Island Swamp is one of the least-altered river swamps in the United States supporting an abundance of game animals, which makes it a popular destination for hunters. The area is part of the Pearl River basin, an ecologically rich labyrinth of bottomland forest, swamp, river and sloughs protected by nearby Pearl River Wildlife Management Area and Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge. Honey Island Swamp got its name generations ago because of honeybees present in the area, and is home to local folklore including the legend of the Honey Island Swamp Monster.
The tour is a 3-4 mile round trip paddle through flooded bald cypress-tupelo swamp habitat and then out to the Pearl River where we stop at a sandbar (alternate routes are possible as well, depending on group interest). Along the way, your guide will share information about the area. During the tour, you will experience a blend of natural beauty and rural Louisiana; you may see huge majestic trees as well as floating hunting/fishing “camps,” and abandoned boats. Our two hour tours utilize tandem kayaks for all group pairs (we may be able to accommodate requests for solo kayaks if the tour size is small). If you are looking for an authentic, laid back swamp experience with the option to swim in the river during summer, this is your tour!
Wildlife sightings: Alligators are RARE in the area of Honey Island Swamp we operate in, and not regularly seen on kayak tours. We can see birds, turtles, and occasionally snakes. Overall, we recommend our Manchac Swamp tour as the better option for spotting a variety of wildlife including alligators, birds and more. Honey Island Swamp kayak tours are water-level dependent.
