Of uncertain origins, Bacchus is the Roman God of wine and a personification of the lifestyle and culture that makes up New Orleans past and present. He was born, blood of Zeus, through an affair with a mortal woman, Semele.
Also known as Dionysus, he was celebrated for over 400 years from 1500-1100 BC by the Mycenean Greeks. Bacchus symbolizes new life, dance, music and of course wine and spirits.
With Mardi Gras season in full swing and big parades right around the corner, Let us all venerate and fulfill Bacchus’ celestial mission “to mingle the music of aulos and bring an end to care and worry, freeing one from one’s normal self by madness, ectascy and wine.” That pretty much sums up what Mardi Gras is all about. Take a lesson from our buddy Bacchus and be weird and wild this season. Find the Bacchus parade route and date along with all the others in the link below. Happy Carnival y’all!
